Your PicoSure Tattoo Removal Aftercare Guide

Each PicoSure tattoo removal session breaks down ink particles that your body then naturally flushes away over the following weeks. Proper aftercare is essential for safe healing, infection prevention, and maximizing ink clearance between sessions. Healing typically takes 3–7 days, and following these guidelines ensures the best outcome.

Day of Treatment

The treated area will be covered with a sterile bandage. Mild discomfort is normal — take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication (Advil, Aleve, Motrin) before bedtime if needed. Ice packs wrapped in cloth can provide additional comfort

Days 1–2

Keep the bandage in place for 1–2 days. Waterproof bandages allow showering. When changing the bandage, gently cleanse with mild soap, pat dry, apply moisturizer, and re-cover with non-adhesive gauze (TELFA) secured with paper tape

Days 2–5

Blistering is normal and a sign of your skin healing. Do NOT pop blisters. Keep them covered until the fluid naturally absorbs. The treated area may feel warm, itchy, or tender — apply moisturizer frequently

Days 5–7

Blisters resolve. Some crusting may occur — do not pick, scratch, or shave the area. Keep the skin moisturized to prevent excessive dryness and itching. Healing is typically complete within this timeframe

Weeks 2–8

Your body continues breaking down and flushing ink particles. The tattoo progressively fades between sessions. Maintain strict sun protection. Your next session is typically scheduled 6–8 weeks after healing

Contact 212-673-8888 immediately if you notice signs of infection: increasing pain, redness, pus, or fever.

What to Expect After Tattoo Removal

PicoSure delivers ultra-short picosecond laser pulses that shatter tattoo ink into tiny particles your body’s immune system can naturally flush away. The treated area will be red, swollen, and tender immediately after treatment — similar to a sunburn. Blistering is common and completely normal, occurring in 3–5 days and resolving on its own.

The healing process typically takes 3–7 days. During this time, your body is actively clearing the shattered ink particles through the lymphatic system. Each treatment session targets a layer of ink, so the tattoo fades progressively over a series of sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

Post-Treatment Care Protocol

Follow these steps carefully after each tattoo removal session:

Keep the treated area covered with a sterile non-adhesive bandage (TELFA) for 1–2 days. Secure with paper tape or waterproof bandages

When cleaning, use mild soap, gently pat dry (never rub), apply moisturizer, and re-cover with a fresh bandage

Do NOT pop blisters — they are a normal part of healing. Keep blisters covered until the fluid naturally absorbs within 3–5 days

Apply moisturizer frequently (Aquaphor, CeraVe, Vaseline, Eucerin, Lubriderm, La Roche-Posay) to prevent dryness and reduce itching

Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, self-tanners, swimming pools, and hot tubs until fully healed (minimum 48–72 hours for water, 4 weeks for sun)

Healing Stages & What to Expect

Blistering

The most common post-treatment reaction. Blisters form within 1–3 days and are a normal sign of your skin healing. Never pop or puncture blisters. Keep them covered with non-adhesive gauze until the fluid naturally absorbs. Blisters typically resolve within 3–5 days.

Redness & Swelling

Immediate redness and mild swelling are expected and similar to a sunburn. Apply ice packs wrapped in cloth for comfort. Swelling typically subsides within 24–48 hours. Redness may persist for several days in sensitive skin.

Crusting & Scabbing

After blisters resolve, the area may form thin crusts or scabs. Do not pick, scratch, or shave the area during this phase. Frequent moisturizing helps prevent excessive crusting and promotes smooth healing.

Pain Management

Mild discomfort is normal, especially the first evening. Take 2–3 over-the-counter NSAIDs (Advil, Aleve, Motrin) before bedtime. Pain typically resolves within 1–2 days. Contact the office if pain increases or is severe.

Sun Protection

UV exposure can cause hyperpigmentation and compromise results. No sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanners for 4 weeks before and after each session. Apply SPF 30+ every 2 hours outdoors. Cover the tattoo area with bandages during sun exposure.

Water & Activity

No swimming pools or hot tubs for 48–72 hours after treatment to prevent infection. Avoid body oils during healing. Light daily activities are fine. Avoid activities that cause heavy sweating until the area has healed.

Essential Care Products

Having the right supplies at home ensures smooth, comfortable healing after each tattoo removal session:

Bandaging Supplies
Non-adhesive gauze pads (TELFA brand recommended) with paper tape or waterproof bandages. Change daily after gentle cleaning. The non-adhesive surface prevents sticking to the healing skin. Keep extra supplies at home for 1–2 weeks.
Moisturizers & Healing
Apply frequently to prevent dryness and itching: Aquaphor, CeraVe Healing Ointment, Vaseline, Eucerin, Lubriderm, or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast. Avoid body oils and fragranced lotions during the healing period.
Sun Protection
Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen is mandatory for exposed tattoo areas. Reapply every 2 hours during outdoor exposure. Physical barrier (bandage or clothing) provides the best protection. Sun protection should begin 4 weeks before your next session.

Does It Hurt?

Your Comfort Options (We Tailor This to You)

Most tattoo removal healing is straightforward. However, you must contact Dr. Avaliani’s office immediately at 212-673-8888 if you experience: increasing pain (rather than decreasing), expanding redness beyond the treated area, pus or unusual discharge, fever, or any signs that concern you. Early intervention prevents complications.

Between sessions, the tattoo will progressively fade as your body clears the shattered ink. Most tattoos require 4–10 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart for complete removal. Patience and consistent aftercare maximize results. Your next session should be scheduled only after the skin has fully healed.
